The Lifeline program is a federal benefit that helps reduce the cost of monthly phone or internet services. Eligible households can receive:

  • At least $9.25 off monthly bills
  • Up to $34.25 in total monthly savings for those living on federally recognized Tribal lands

This discount helps low-income individuals stay connected to family, job opportunities, health services, and emergency assistance.

Lifeline Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, you must meet one of the following:

Based on Income

Your household income must be at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Based on Program Participation

You can also qualify if you or someone in your household receives benefits from one or more of these programs:

  • Medicaid
  • SNAP (Food Stamps)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
  • Veterans Pension or Survivors Benefit

For Tribal Residents

You may also be eligible through participation in:

  • Tribal TANF
  • BIA General Assistance
  • Tribal Head Start (income-based)
  • FDPIR

What Counts as a Household?

A household includes anyone living together who shares income and expenses. Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household, even if multiple people qualify individually.

This includes people living:

  • In group housing
  • At shelters
  • In temporary residences (e.g. motels or transitional housing)

Independent households at the same address may still qualify with proper documentation.

How to Apply for Lifeline?

You can apply through a Lifeline-approved provider. Here’s how:

  1. Enter your ZIP code on the provider’s website
  2. Choose a plan that fits your needs
  3. Submit proof of eligibility — either income documents or participation in a qualifying program

In some states, eligibility may be verified through an online database. If not, you’ll need to upload or mail in your documents.

Lifeline Free Tablet

Lifeline Free Tablet works in collaboration with the Lifeline Government Program to help eligible low-income individuals across the U.S. get access to free or discounted tablets, phones, and internet service.

By partnering with Lifeline-approved service providers, Lifeline Free Tablet ensures that qualifying participants not only stay connected but also have access to essential tools for education, job searching, healthcare, and daily communication.

If you qualify for the Lifeline Program, you may also be eligible to receive a free or low-cost tablet through participating providers, often with just a small one-time co-pay. This is part of a broader initiative to close the digital gap and support underserved communities.
